While the fight for civil rights would surely continue, as evidenced by many factors over the years. Including but not limited to the most recent event of being passed as a national federal holiday by President Joe Biden on Thursday, June 10, 2021, 158 years after the General Order was issued granting black slaves their freedom, the order was signed in 1863. Still, it took 2 full years, on June 19th of 1865, before the slaves were all informed and actually freed.
I suppose one might say it’s bittersweet to gain their freedom, but they had so much still to fight for. The General Order clearly gave them their freedom, and they were now able to work for wages, but many had to remain on as hired laborers for their former masters. It was many years of uphill battles before getting to where they are today, and sadly racism is still alive and well.
I hope that by sharing this tidbit with you, you will inform yourself of our history because so much of it is not even known to us. I personally wasn’t aware of Juneteenth for many years until a friend shared it with me and taught me about it.
